The biggest retailers in Australia and New Zealand are all offering to buy your stuff from them, and it is starting to get cheaper.
Consign.com, which owns The Frugal Living store, has been offering to purchase your items for $75,000 in the last year.
The company has been selling furniture online for over 15 years and has had a presence in New Zealand since 2004.
“It’s the best way to make money and get the most out of your money,” said Matt Roper, a co-founder of consignment store.
The store was founded by a former IT consultant and business student, and is now a popular seller of furniture.
“Consign is a one-stop shop for everything you need to sell your furniture,” Mr Roper said.
“It has all the information you need on a lot of different types of furniture.”
The company offers more than 700 products and more than 50,000 products are available for sale at consignment stores.
“We’re offering to sell them on consignment through a variety of retailers and they will have everything you’ll need to get the best deal,” Mr Robinson said.
“There’s a lot more you can do with it than just buying the furniture online.”
Mr Robinson said the consignment site would have a lot to offer the young entrepreneur.
“I’ve got a bit of a passion for selling stuff online, so it’s a way to keep my skills fresh and my business fresh,” he said.
The website is not only a way for Mr Robinson to keep the business going, but he has found he is more interested in the future of the business.
“You want to be in business for the long term,” he explained.
“My main goal is to see this business grow and grow as much as possible.”
Consignment store owner Matt Ropers says the company offers a cheaper way to sell goods online.
Mr Roper’s business is now growing and he has also been able to keep his business open through the consigner’s discount website, which is a cheaper alternative to buying the products at consign.
The online marketplace has a long way to go, but the future looks bright for consignment shop owner Mr Ropers.
“The future is bright, but we’re just getting started,” he told FourFourtwo.
Consign currently sells about 80 per cent of its inventory online, and he says his store has already been offered more than $25,000 for a single item.
“They were willing to pay the difference for the furniture, which I was really happy about,” he joked.
“People are starting to realise that the consigning business is a great way to diversify their income.”
Consign has already started using the consigned items in its business, which means the company can sell furniture and other products to its online customers, without having to be on site to do the final processing.
“That’s the big deal, to be able to sell on consign,” Mr Robins said.
He said his store was already being used to sell a range of other items online.
“When we sell furniture to consigners, they’re just selling it, we’re not getting anything in return,” he added.
Consignment shop owners say the online marketplace could be the next big thing for the retail industry.
“Online shopping is going to become the next wave, it’s just a matter of when and how much,” Mr Daley said.
